About Portland Fruit Tree Project

Mission: To increase equitable access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce. Since 2007, Portland Fruit Tree Project (PFTP) has organized community members to share in the harvest of neighborhood fruit and make it available to people in need. 

Position Overview

The Harvest Coordinator will be responsible for organizing, preparing, and implementing PFTP's Backyard Harvest Program and our new Harvest Box Pilot Program in Summer and Fall 2020. This position will report to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. Successful applicants will need to be prepared to be flexible and able to creatively adapt harvests in a COVID-19 environment.

  • Employment Status: Seasonal, Part-time Position, June 15 - December 15, 2020

  • Location: Some administrative work (e.g. preparation for Harvests) will take place at our office located in NE Portland, or can be done from a home office. Harvest events and harvest box pickups will require travel throughout the Portland Metropolitan area, with use of the PFTP truck for transport.

  • Compensation and Schedule: $18/hr, 20 hrs/wk; flexible schedule prioritizing dates that are best for Harvest volunteers.

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule, lead, and coordinate volunteers for Backyard Harvest events and the Harvest Box Pilot Program

  • Lead participants at harvests to safely harvest fruit

  • Coordinate with homeowners/tree owners to assess trees and properties for harvest

  • Coordinate distribution of fruit to recipient agencies from harvest events as well as harvest boxes from people’s homes

  • Create COVID-specific volunteer training, and revise current training for digital and in-person events

  • Connect with past Harvest Leaders and identify new lead prospects to increase harvest capacity

  • Collect and record data following harvests

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience planning and coordinating volunteer activities, preferably in the fields of food security, food justice, urban farming, or community-based nonprofits.

  • Strong communication skills – written and verbal.

  • Passion for social equity and food justice.

  • Ability to handle and lift heavy equipment, including boxes of fruit and orchard ladders.

  • Valid Driver’s License in the State of Oregon, a clean driving record, and willingness to drive a pick-up truck.  

  • Strong independent work-ethic

  • Desire to work with, and recruit, a diverse base of volunteers

  • Comfortable utilizing Google Suite (email, documents, and spreadsheets primarily)

Preferred: 

  • Access to a smart phone for navigating to harvest sites and communicating with volunteers

  • Familiarity with Portland Fruit Tree Project
