Current info (Summer 2024) on How to Get Free Shade Trees Planted in Portland

Wow, this was a HOT week in Portland…. and so much hotter for so many folx without shade for their homes.

As you know, we love planting and caring for multi-use trees that provide shade and food for Portland, make sure you are subscribed to our newsletter to find out when our next free tree planting event or sale is happening!

But also, we need so much more shade in less tree dense neighborhoods to provide the easiest solution to our hotter and hotter summers, and we also need managed street tree care to stabilize trees for our more extreme winters. Our friend and longtime Portland Activist Albert Kaufman sent us an email this week with a great round up of the current tree planting programs available in the city.

We are providing the email’s content here, and encourage folx to get on Albert’s mailing list and follow along on the Facebook group “We Keep Trees Standing”.

Happy Reading! and, if you have the space or know someone who does, consider planting a tree!

“As you're probably aware by now, the City is not planting trees via Friends of Trees as it did in the past. But they are gearing up to plant a lot of trees - someday. Personally, I'd love to see a million trees planted in the region every year - but I seem to be alone in this.

In the meantime, Here are some options. Please share these links far and wide!

Here are some of the programs and forms Urban Forestry have available right now and many of these opportunities involve engagement with the community:

Let Urban Forestry know if you have any questions about the programs or ideas for improvement. Again, thank you for your continued advocacy for our community and trees!"

Have a great 4th! There's a burn ban in effect.

Our Facebook group continues to provide a ton of interesting articles and information. Please come join us over there and see what your fellow activists are doing! This is where many trees that are threatened get the spotlight and possibly help organize people to stop them from coming down. Please invite your friends who love trees to join, too.
