Meet our Partners: Familias en Acción | Latino Health Equity Conference 6/9-6/10

“Familias en Acción’s main focus is the Latinx community,” says Diana Tapia, Community
Health Worker Program Coordinator.

Founded in 1998, Familias en Acción was born out of a need to provide health and wellness services to the Latinx population in Portland and surrounding areas. The program offers a huge amount of services, from health education in topics such as diabetes care, HIV, and nutrition to food pantries to mother and baby services. But Familias en Acción doesn’t stop with physical health. Diana and her coworkers also tackle the
increasingly important topics of climate equity and food justice.

Climate equity means striving to ensure equal protection from environmental hazards as well as
equal access to the benefits of the environment regardless of race or income status. Food justice
is a central component to climate equity. That’s why Portland Fruit Tree Project partners with
Familias en Acción to provide fresh fruit to families in the Latinx community that would not otherwise have access to them.

PFTP intends to work with Diana and her staff again this year, and in years to come as Familias en Acción continues to grow.

“This is the first year we are in Clackamas. We are expanding, but it takes a lot of work,” says Diana. In the future, a focus will be on disease prevention—access to and ownership of healthy foods and food sources are a big component to that.

On June 9th and 10th, Familias en Accion will host the 13th annual Latino Health Equity Conference in Portland and online. Diana urges anyone who wants to learn more about health equity in the Latinx community to check it out. This year’s focus will be on community health workers. It’s fun and full of great information.
Portland Fruit Tree Project is excited to continue to work with this great organization, and is proud to help local communities connect with local food sources.
