Indexing for Homeowners and Tree Stewards
First off, thanks for your interest in being a part of this broad community science project! Without you, this effort would be fruitless! Below you’ll find what we anticipate will be your first questions. Do you have other questions? Please email info at portlandfruit.org!
What data is collected and how it is used?
There are a lot of data points we hope to collect, but the core of it is the size, health, vitality and location of your fruit trees and any of the ways that someone might interact with the trees to care for them (that might be you updating your own information or us updating it if we provide tree care or harvesting services).
We’d love information about you including your demographic and contact information. You don’t have to provide anything you don’t want to, and we’ll use demographics to paint a picture of who in our city does, and doesn’t, have access to fruit producing trees. Contact information will only be used by us and to connect with you on things you’ve expressed interest in.
Index it Yourself!
With so many fruit and nut trees in the city, we invite you to index your own tree and share updates! To get your tree counted, please fill out this form. If you include your contact information, we can send you reminders to share when your tree is producing, how much the yield was, and any notes on care you provided. This data will help us make the case for supporting fruit trees - and other trees - to support our urban forest and orchard. In addition to being a part of a region-wide community science project, we’ll also be hosting opportunities to learn more and connect with other fruit tree enthusiasts.
Basic Instructions:
We will be using Survey123 for our tree indexing, you can either download the app or use it through the browser. We have run into technical difficulties with certain phones and operating systems so you may have to try both.

Step 1: Download the Survey123 by ESRI, it is available in both the Apple and Google app stores
Step 2: First try with by opening the app, if that does not work open in the browser.
Step 3: Now it's time to start indexing! Make sure GPS is on.
